Meet Woofy CubCake Oliver “Ace” Davis!

CubCake Ace Davis

Hi Ace,
What does the term “Bear” mean to you?

“I’ve actually had a lot of discussions about this. I am a straight transgender man and I do not identify as a bear. However I do label myself as a pup. People seem to get very offended by this because they say that only gay men can claim that along with bear, cub, wolf, ect. But I disagree with that. I think a bear is someone who, regardless of sexual orientation, is of large stature, not necessarily tall, with tons of body hair, and is a kind person.”

CubCake Ace Davis

What’s your idea of a perfect date?

“A perfect date to me would be going on a hike in the Appalachian mountains and watching the sunrise while eating a breakfast we packed.”

CubCake Ace Davis

How would you describe your personal interior design style?

“I would say lack there of. I don’t really have a style. If I had to choose one I would say rustic minimalist.”

CubCake Ace Davis

What kind of music do you listen to?

“I love country, blue grass, folk, and indie. My favorite band is called Listener. It’s spoken words to music.”

Personal Statement: Hi, I’m Oliver, and I am asking for help. It’s not easy to talk about, but here goes.
I am a trans man. For those who don’t know what that is, I was assigned female at birth, but always internally felt like a man. Since I’ve medically transitioned to male I’m happier and more fulfilled. Every trans person takes their own path. No two paths are alike. For me, to feel best about myself in my body I need to take one more step on my path that requires additional surgery. So, I’m reaching out to anyone with a few extra bucks to spare to help me out. You may or may not know me, but I assure you any contribution, even a small one, will honestly mean I will be closer to being comfortable in my own skin. Nothing is more important than that, whether you’re trans or not. If you can help, you have my deepest gratitude. If you can share this page with others via social media, whether you can contribute or not, you also have my deepest gratitude. Be well, and know that I truly appreciate every penny raised by this personal fund. http://www.gofundme.com/fq1oo0

Hi Clint,
What does the term “Bear” mean to you?

“When I close my eyes and think of what a bear is, I probably have the same visual image as most people. Visually, bears tend to be beefier guys with facial and body hair as well as a blue collar or hyper-masculine look. But to me, the term bear goes deeper than the visual aspect. I think the bear community as a whole is all about acceptance. I have traveled to many bear events and there are guys of so many shapes and sizes, furry and non-furry, and they all consider themselves bears. Bears, in my opinion, tend to be more accepting of each other, very social in nature, and fun-loving. I always joke that the bear community is always so friendly and accepting because we eat! We eat, we drink, and…well…we do what men do. So being a bear to me is about being who you are, and enjoying each other for who and what we are.”

What’s your idea of a perfect date?

“Honestly, I have had the “perfect date”. I was lucky enough to be with the man of my dreams for 17 years so I have had a million perfect dates. The next man I date/love will be someone who makes me laugh, and that I make laugh too. You know, the you’re laughing so hard you’re wiping tears from your face and can’t breathe kind of laughter. Whether we are at a restaurant, at a bar with friends or just lying on the couch cuddling up together, I want to laugh. The man who makes me laugh will win my heart. Any date with that man will be the perfect date.”

How would you describe your personal interior design style?

“I am a very simple guy, so my tastes tend to run as such. My favorite room in the house is my den. It has a southwest design with a lot of earth tones. The walls are lined with cowboy hats and southwestern art. Of course that room also has a big screen television and two very comfy couches.”

What kind of music do you listen to?

“My taste in music changes all the time. I can enjoy anything from choral music to hard rock. Most of the music on my ITunes is dance music, with some country thrown in for fun. I love to dance to both. Whatever the sound, words are important to me. I have to know every word to every song. I want to understand the lyrics and what they mean. Understanding the words and lyrics makes it easier when I am singing along.”

Fitness Routine:
“When all the pieces and parts are working, LOL, I am at the gym 4 times a week. I do a very basic exercise routine of upper body/lower body. I try to change my routine every 3-4 weeks. Even if that just means changing from dumbbells to a machine. Anything to break up the exercises to keep my mind interested and my body confused. I also do treadmill two or three times a weeks and once a week I try to play some basketball.”

Occupation: “Human Resources/Corporate Trainer – I hire, train, and fire… (not necessarily in that order).”

Hobbies: “I love to travel. I try to travel somewhere every month. It’s a big gay world out there, and I want to see it all. My trips don’t have to take me across the world, but somewhere where I can meet new people and experience different things. I admit I am developing a fondness for several European countries though.

Because of my love for music, I like to make dance remixes. A couple times a year I will organize an event at the local bar where I can DJ and share my music. The last party was a lumberjack party.

Finally, I love to bake. I am the type of person that shows they care by baking for people. My momma told me when I was just a little bear-cub, “If you want to keep those bears happy, you’ll need to learn to cook in more than one room of the house”. So I learned to cook, everything else came naturally.”

Guilty Pleasure Snack: “Well like any bear, I can’t get within a mile of a cupcake without starting to drool. But when I think “guilty pleasure”, I think of things that I love so much I can’t stop myself; my biggest guilty pleasure is Flaming Hot Cheetos. They are crazy addictive! I can sit and eat a whole bag and not think twice. I especially love when my fingers are covered with yummy Cheetos goodness! I will even tear open the bag to make sure I get to the crumbs at the very bottom of the bag.”

TV Faves: “If you were to check my DVR over the past year, you would find True Blood (did not like the ending), Walking Dead, Hot in Cleveland, Tosh.0, Cupcake Wars and Robot Chicken (how’s that for a mix). I also watch a lot of sports as I am a big Kentucky Wildcat fan (Go Big Blue)!”

Beefcake Clint

Last good movie you saw: “The last movie was Guardians of the Galaxy. It was such a fun, quirky movie. I loved it.”

Turn Ons: “I have a major beard fetish. A nicely trimmed and well defined beard is really hot. Chest fur is also pretty high on my list. Sexy muscle cubs and daddy bears always catch my eye. I like guys who look like they take care of themselves physically, but they can’t be too serious about it. If you’re going to stress over eating a cupcake (or 2…or 3), you’re not the guy for me. Life is too short to not eat cupcakes.”

Turn Offs: “I don’t like people who are arrogant, rude, disrespectful or passive aggressive.”

Personal Statement: “Over the past few years I have learned that life is short. We have to kind and love each other because we don’t know what tomorrow will bring. I also believe we have to take time to laugh and to make each other laugh. If we can laugh together, we can be compassionate with one another; if we can laugh together, we can forgive each other; if we can laugh together, we can LOVE each other. Make someone laugh today.”

Beefcake of the Week ~ Erik Byrne

Hi Erik,
What’s your idea of a perfect date?

“That’s easy… a day that starts at home having coffee together with our sweet dog on the sofa… then becomes brunch (either just us or with friends)…. a small shopping trip (for big boy toys)…. A good 3 to 4 hours locked away in the playroom…. an afternoon spent at the naked beach…. grab Thai take out on the way home… eat said take out while we’re happily back on the sofa with that wonderful dog. I guess my partner and I don’t really do “date night”. But we LOVE “date day”

What does the term “Bear” mean to you?

“I’ll say this… I’ve got friends in the bear community that represent each extreme end of the spectrum and everything in between. Some that don’t even necessarily have a “look” that would suggest “Bear”. But they feel it and they feel a part of a community that is familiar to them. This is where I realized that a sense of belonging, no matter how deep or how shallow it might seem to someone else, is really important to those who kinda never really did belong… I’ll say this, I had never noticed anyone “woofing” at me for the first 10 years of my “out” life. Then one day I moved to San Francisco, a couple of bears “woofed” my direction.. and when I “woofed” back… it was ON. And I’m so glad I did.”

How would you describe your personal interior design style?

“I had worked in the industry as a designer for 12 years before moving into the financial side of the business. I’d like to think that I developed a solid personal style I could stand by…. But really I think I simply acquired a tolerance level for a wide range of styles. I guess what I mean is that I’ll easily find comfort and beauty in almost any space so long as its creator(s) present it with confidence in what it’s supposed to represent…. Except, of course, for anything even slightly resembling “shabby chic”. Shabby Chic is disgusting.”

What kind of music do you listen to?

“I’m a country boy at heart and country music will always be my go-to. Beyond that, I’ll listed to anything and everything Top 40-ish. Pretty much anything that causes my DJ friends stomachs to turn…”

Location: San Francisco

Height: 5’9″

Hair: “Brown with some “salt” coming in and rapidly receding.”

Eyes: Blue-ish

Fitness Routine:
“I’m THE WORST about the gym. Never liked it, never felt comfortable in one since long ago in junior high school gym class. (insert personal gym locker room story here) But I get up and go as many times a week as I’m able (always before work). But really, if I look at all like I spend any amount of time committed to a rigorous work out… the credit goes to flagging. I flag whenever I have a few free minutes. In the back yard, head phones in, country music blasting, and my many straight neighbors staring at me through their azaleas… looking just a little bit worried.”

Occupation: “Finance and Business Manager for SF Interior Design firm.”

Hobbies: “White Water Rafting, snowboarding, creating flower arrangements for our home. And, um… can you call Burning Man a “hobby”? Probably not, but I stand by it.”

Guilty Pleasure Snack: JIF Reduced Fat Creamy Peanut Butter and Cinnamon Life Cereal. Try it. I triple. dog. dare. you. And no, I do NOT try to “work it off” at the gym later. Just enjoy it.”

TV Faves: “I like, and will watch nearly anything I guess…. But my “can’t miss” shows would be The Daily Show, Chelsea Lately, and… The Soup. I refuse to get my news from a network. All the networks are complete dicks in their own way and it’s become boring and sad. I get my real news from the most logical source I can think of… My friends ranting on Facebook.”

Last good movie you saw: “Maleficent.’ Freakin loved it. I’m an unabashed mainstream consumer and this movie delivered.”

Currently Reading: “Listening to the ‘Tales of the City’ audiobooks on my commute each day. I’ve read all the at least twice so this is a completely different experience.”

Turn Ons: Body Hair (preferably not trimmed), confidence, experience, bedroom eyes, rough hands, silver daddies, and passion for what you do, knowing when to be a Gentleman and knowing when to be a Swine.”

Turn Offs: “Arrogance, intolerance, overcompensating, ignored insecurities… I guess these are things that we all exhibit in our own way, especially me.”

Personal Statement: “A sweet and wonderful lesbian friend once said to me (upon seeing and talking to me for the first time since growing up a little bit… beard and fur and such) ‘Honey, if you’re gonna be a Bear, then be a Grizzly.’ I believe what she meant was embrace your natural strength and do what you do well. Do it with integrity and love and power. Don’t look back too much and don’t ever look down on anyone else who’s having a rougher time than you are having with something. We all need a little help at one time or another. At least that’s what I believe anyway.”

Meet Performing/Recording Artist Mike MRF Flanagan

Modern Bear discovers there more to musician Mike Flanagan than fur and beefcake…

Musician Mike MRF Flanagan

Hi Mike,
When did you first know you were musically inclined?

“From the time I started on saxophone when I was 10, it felt pretty natural. Music always moved me and creating it myself just felt right.”

How many instruments do you play?

“Saxophone and piano, saxophone being my principle, are my main instruments and the only instruments I perform on professionally. I also play flute, clarinet, a little trumpet, a little bass, and a little percussion.”

Mike MRF Flanagan

Was your family supportive of you performing?

“Absolutely! My grandfather was my original inspiration/teacher. He started teaching me piano when I was 14 and he would help me practice saxophone before that. He played trumpet and sang and played great chords on piano so I got a ton of it from him.”

Tell us about MRF Mob Music?

“MRF is my initials and it just feels right with that representing me as my artist name. Mob Music is slightly more complex to explain. Mob Music started as a night in Boston at LGBT cornerstone, Club Cafe/Napoleon Room with myself and Lisa Bello. We took Thursday nights and made them our own and Mob Music, which started as a joke because we are both Italian, almost became our band name and really the power involved in our music and stage presence. Justin Waithe came in one night and started harmonizing with us and immediately Mob Music was complete. He was the piece that completed the vision. Sheree Dunwell also came in and everything became stacked with beautiful 3-part harmony. Mob Music is really our band name, but the album being my sophomore project, we decided to name the album that.”

MRF Mob Music

What’s next for your career?

“We will be releasing my next Music Video for my song “Trying”. Trying is the radio single from the Mob Music album and it’s on over 60 radio stations both nationally and internationally. I’m super excited about this Music Video as it features myself and another bear in a love and loss narrative. So excited about this one! I also just started working on my next project. We are at the very beginning stages but it will be out sometime in 2015.”

Hi Matthew!
What does the term “Bear” mean to you?

“I think this is a fluid, changing term – but generally a hairy guy, can be bigger or more muscular. In my experience, most are friendly and fun-loving.”

What’s your idea of a perfect date?

What kind of music do you listen to?

“Varied! For the most part indie or euro-pop: Death Cab for Cutie and The Postal Service; Robyn; The xx; LCD Soundsystem; Peter Bjorn and John.”
