Hi James!
What does the term “Bear” mean to you?

“I am lucky enough to be a part of a generation that had access to the internet from a relatively young age, so after realizing that I was gay but not being at all attracted to the gay stereotypes that were presented in the media I was able to discover the bear world online. Discovering this community enabled me to feel more confident in myself. It allowed me to just be me (stocky and hairy) and not have to worry about trying to be someone I’m not in order to fit in.
I guess the term bear for me also has connotations about getting older. I’ve been labeling myself as a cub for almost 10 years, but more and more I’m being told I’m getting too old/big for that label!”
My only gripe with the term is when people treat it as some sort of exclusive ‘club’ which requires you to possess certain attributes in order to become part of a ‘clique’ – for example, ‘muscle bears’ that will only acknowledge the existence of other guys with a certain amount of muscle is a real turn off.”

What’s your idea of a perfect date?

“The way to my heart is definitely through my stomach, so either cooking/being cooked for or going out for a hearty meal definitely has to be in there somewhere! If staying in this would then be followed by snuggling up with a good movie and a big bowl of popcorn. If heading out I enjoy walking around town hand in hand, maybe catch a show at the theatre and then end the evening with a few drinks. Then depending on energy levels maybe a good dance until the following morning.”

How would you describe your personal design style?

“With regards to clothing I’m very much a t-shirt and jeans kinda guy, I tend to stick to stuff that’s comfortable rather than fashionable. If I find something I REALLY like I’ll buy one in every color available and wear them until they fall apart.
As far as ‘interior’ design style goes, I have absolutely no style at all – I’m happy to leave that to professionals!”

Location: London, UK

Height: 5’ 10”

Hair: Beard – Red, everywhere else – dirty blonde

Eyes: Green

Sign: Capricorn

Fitness Routine:
“I grew up loathing all forms of exercise, and the only thing I ever did to keep remotely fit was walking a few miles a day. 6 months ago I decided it was time for a change and joined my first ever gym. I’ve been going 4-5 times per week since then, and really look forward to every single trip – if you had told me 5 years ago that one day I would be excited about exercise I probably would have keeled over from laughing!
I suffer from really bad tennis elbow meaning any prolonged use of dumbbells or barbells leaves me in agony for days, so I tend to stick to the resistance machines and cables and focus on a couple of body parts each visit, with a bit of cardio thrown in at the beginning (gotta keep the ticker healthy!). I am lucky enough to have 2 very special men in my life who continually push and encourage me in the gym, and they teach me more and more with each visit.
At the moment my general goal is just to increase my size, so I’m currently on a ‘dirty bulk’ diet (which is amazing!), and not too bothered about getting a bit of a belly (one of the major benefits of being part of ‘bear culture’ is that this is widely accepted!). I know I can’t keep this up forever, but I’m enjoying it at the moment, and from comments I’ve received it seems to be working. I’ve also put on about 10kg (22lbs) since joining the gym (purely from mountains of steak & chicken!), and outgrown pretty much all of my favorite clothes.”

Occupation: “Clinical data systems analyst for a large pharmaceutical company.”

Hobbies: “I LOVE going to the Theatre (mainly musicals, but plays also), and have been known to queue for 6 hours from 4am to get front row tickets to shows before – it’s a relatively new passion, but one that I’m really enjoying. I also enjoy: Movies (mainly horror and comedy), Reading, Gym, Xbox, baking, being an uncle, and I’ve recently started learning Spanish.”
I was invited to take part in my first ever photo shoot a couple of weeks ago (some of the photos are being used as part of this post – thanks to Vincent Keith from Mascular Studios for those!) and since then have taken part in a second, so who knows, maybe I might explore modelling further as a new hobby.
I’m also a trained firefighter as a part of my job, which I enjoy a lot!”

Guilty Pleasure Snack: “I’m pretty public about this one, and most of my friends and acquaintances would probably be able to answer on my behalf: JAFFA CAKES. I know a lot of people reading this might never have heard of them (I’m sorry for you) as I think they’re a pretty British thing – they’re basically round discs of orangey heaven covered in chocolate. I can go through a box of them in literally seconds. Oh, and tubs of Ben & Jerry’s Phish Food have been known to vanish in a similar amount of time also.”

TV Faves: “American Horror Story (my current number 1!), Looking, Breaking Bad, Arrested Development, Parks & Recreation, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Modern Family, Glee (yeah, I know!), Smash, Lost, The Great British Bake Off.”

Last good movie you saw: “This is probably going to be pretty cliché and completely emasculate me, but I absolutely loved ‘Frozen’ and watched it 3 times in the space of a week. As I’ve mentioned I am a big fan of musicals (and still a big kid at heart), so by reading about how the format and style of the film was close to a West End/Broadway show I knew immediately that I would love it. The animation is beautiful, the music is incredible and a few of my current favorite stars are in it and play their parts perfectly (Idina Menzel, Jonathan Groff & Josh Gad). If you’re hesitant and thinking it’s just another kids movie, I’d definitely recommend you give it a go. I’ve also read that the rights to make it into a Broadway show have already been sold – I am waiting with bated breath.
Also, a video of me lip syncing to ‘Love Is an Open Door’ exists but is yet to be published online until I get enough confidence!”

Currently Reading: “I’ve just finished Doctor Sleep by Stephen King. I am a HUGE fan of King and have a whole bookcase dedicated to his work. Really enjoyed this sequel to one of my favorites!”

Turn Ons: “Masculinity, Spontaneity, Modesty, a man who likes his food.”

Turn Offs: “People being rude to service staff is probably my biggest one. For example, if I’m out to dinner and someone is unnecessarily rude to a waiter/waitress it drives me insane. Also arrogance, boasting, cockiness and anyone who practices one-upmanship on a regular basis.”

Gay Dating Expert: HIV Disclosure

Gay Dating Expert

Dear GDE

I met a guy, we dated slept together after a couple of dates and got into a rhythm of being in a relationship. Four months down the line he announced that he’s been HIV+ for five years. I went into melt down, although we’ve practiced mainly safe sex we didn’t when giving and receiving oral. I feel he should have told me before we slept together. I’ve had a test and I’m negative, but we’ve only met up for coffee a couple of times since, he was very worried when I went for the test, which made me thing he’d realized I’d been put at risk.

Is there a legal guideline about disclosure?

Name Withheld

Some people disclose at different times, however I personally feel it should before sex to give the choice. No matter how safe you are, something could happen and the person could be put at risk. It’s a very emotive issue, and I can appreciate that someone with HIV would want to be identified as a person before being identified as a chronic illness.

I don’t know which country you live in and I’m not a lawyer, however if you want to get the black and white legal aspect I suggest you speak with your local HIV advice center.

“Style in Steel Home” – Architect Donald Wexler

One of our fave Mid Century Modern architects is Donald Wexler, who was hugely influential in creating the classic Palm Springs look in the homes he designed. He is known for pioneering the use of steel in residential architecture, and in 1962, he designed the all-steel Alexander houses.

In 1967, Wexler designed the fabulous “Style in Steel” house located in Buena Park, California, and featured here in these brilliant photos by Julius Shulman.

Modern Bear Bling ~ Men’s Jewelry by Heidi Abrahamson

Heidi Abrahamson is the daughter of German immigrants who came to the United States at the height of the mid-twentieth century explosion of modern design. Her parents appreciation for architecture and design of the period was passed on to Heidi. While still in high school she found a particular fondness for modern silversmiths of the 20th century. She began collecting works of N.E. From, Georg Jensen, Andreas Mikkelson, Esther Lewittes, Ed Levin and others. The collected works of these silversmiths continue to be the inspiration for Heidi’s work today.

At Indiana University Heidi studied fine arts and interior design. Leaving Indiana for Seattle, she began a career in visual merchandising for I. Magnin, The Bon Marche’, Burberry’s of London and other local retailers. A desire to create on a more personal level lead Heidi back to her early love of jewelry.

Heidi began creating beaded jewelry, but soon grew dissatisfied with what she saw as limitations of the medium. Her design sensibilities demanded a medium with which she construct and sculpt jewelry as modern architecture for the body. In 2003 she began working in the medium she came to love as child, silver. Heidi is also working with 14k and 18kt gold. In the last few years, Heidi’s unique custom rings have become popular for gay weddings.

With just three basic courses completed in casting, smithing and stone setting, Heidi is primarily self taught. Her studio is open to the public and located in central Phoenix.

Heidi is also a good friend of Modern Bear – one of our dear “Goldilocks!” She creates our popular pewter Bear Tags featured in our Modern Bear Shop.

Retro Futurism – The Art of Syd Mead

I have always been fascinated by the illustrations of visual futurist, Syd Mead. His images transport you to another fantastical time in the future, but because of their period, are still firmly rooted in the Mid Century. He is best known for his designs for science-fiction films such as Blade Runner, Aliens and Tron. Of his work, Mead was once moved to comment: “I’ve called science fiction ‘reality ahead of schedule.'”

Meet CubCake Dustin!

Hi Dustin,
How did your attraction to the Bear culture come about?

“My attraction came about more recently in my life actually. My whole life, I’ve never thought I belonged anywhere in the gay community, was always overlooked and ignored. I wasn’t really too much into the scene, and didn’t really know about subcultures and whatnot. But luckily, I sprouted an awesome beard and found guys that are just like me. I think I’ve found my niche :)”

What does the term “Bear” mean to you?

“To me, when I think of the word “bear,” I automatically think of a fuzzy, furry, bearded, cozy, rugged man or an animal that steals pic-a-nic baskets :)”

What’s your idea of a perfect date?

“Dinner or coffee, a long walk while getting to know each other, and maybe ice cream :D”

How would you describe your personal design style?

“I’m ridiculously simple. jeans, t-shirt, hoodie and chucks. I only dress up for special occasions.”

HusBear Material – Gary

HusBear Material GaryHello, Gary!
What does the term “Bear” mean to you?

“There are tall bears, short bears, furry bears and bears with no hair at all! It’s all about size. A full shape muscular or chubby boy or man always catches my eye first. Love a man with meat on his bones!”

“I was a skinny kid! I always ran with the bigger boys! By the time I was 11 I was very attracted to cubby football size boys and started playing around on sleep overs. I was raised on a horse ranch so getting guys to spend the weekend was never a problem. Summers always involved bouts of poison ivy rashes from playing with each other out in the woods! I’m sure the local pharmacy looked forward to their summer calamine lotion sales!”

What’s your idea of a perfect date?

“I’m pretty old fashioned when it comes to dating. Drinks and dinner. If there is mutual attraction then a romp in the hay! My daddy always said ‘ ya gotta feed em before you can fuck em!’ He was right!”

How would you describe your personal design style?

“I design build and remodel for a living. I’ve done restorations of 150 year old mansions in Tennessee , new mansions in Oklahoma, everything from old world to industrial night clubs! My personal taste has evolved over the years but I would have to say I’m very eclectic, love my antiques and my stainless steel and glass! In clothes I’m a jeans and sweatshirt kind of guy!”

Location: North Oklahoma

Height: 6′

Hair: Salt and pepper

Fitness Routine:
“After a breakup last year I took a long hard look at myself and decided I couldn’t blame him for losing interest. I had become an old man. My muscles were soft, I had a big flabby belly. My knees and ankles hurt constantly from weighing almost 300 pounds, and my diabetes was out of control. Instead of having a break down I got mad. Mad at myself for letting myself get this way. I went back to the gym twice a day, six days a week. By June I had lost a lot of weight but my muscles weren’t responding … I was over 60! Let’s face it, by this time my testosterone levels were about zilch! I started testosterone treatments through my doctor and hired a personal trainer 3 days a week. Things started changing very quickly!

My muscles started coming back, my strength and endurance was getting better and best of all I was waking up with morning wood! My sex drive had really waned over the years so this was a pleasant surprise! My insulin is now less than half of what I was taking, blood pressure is normal, and I’m horny all the time! For an old man who prefers younger, this was a godsend!!! Lol I work different parts of my body twice a week and push to the max with less weight but more reps. Curling with 50’s now and pressing 225. I’m down 65 pounds since last April and getting the body I used to have back again. I’ll be 65 in April and my goal is another 15 pounds and to start seeing a little of my abs! I’m sure I can do it. And to you older men out there….. You can too! You just have to want it. The proudest moment of my life was pride parade in Dallas this last fall, walking through the crowd with my shirt off and getting grrr’s and whistles from men and women!”

Hobbies: “I used to own several night clubs and restaurants and I would dj in them, still collect dance music and make mix cd’s.”
